Over the past month Moonlight Bride has lit up the blogosphere with rave reviews and comparisons to everyone from Pains of Being Pure At Heart and The Jesus Mary Chain to My Bloody Valentine and Surfer Blood. Featuring the pop-gaze anthem “Lemonade,” Twin Lakes finds Moonlight Bride at their best, weaving brooding guitars with driving melodies and poignant vocals that drip with raw emotion. The five song EP, produced by Stephen Nichols and mixed by John Goodmanson (Death Cab For Cutie, Los Campesinos!), flows seamlessly in a dream-like procession through peaks and valleys of noise-pop ecstasy, further revealing the band’s remarkable knack for memorable songwriting

The Canyon Observer – The Current of Her Ocean Brings Me To My Knees

canyon observer The Canyon Observer The Current of Her Ocean Brings Me To My Knees

The Canyon Observer is a five member post/noise/sludge band. They involve sheer primal agression and atmospheric noise escapades in their music. The Canyon Observer shared stages with bands like Russian Circles and Rosetta. The band also made quite an impression with their cover of Nirvana’s Territorial Pissings, that was made for the 20th anniversary of Nevermind. In October 2011 they released their first EP Chapter I: The Current of Her Ocean Brings Me to My Knees. Their first tour is behind them (Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Bolgaria) and they will strike on another tour in April 2012. You can expect “Chapter II” in the second half of 2012.

I first heard of The Canyon Observer when a representative from their label, Kapa Records, contacted me to check them out.  I decided to hold off on listening until now because I wanted to improve how I write reviews, especially for music I don’t listen to on a regular basis.  The Current of Her Ocean Brings Me to My Knees is the first EP from The Canyon Observer contains four tracks that provide a wonderful gamut of what the band has to offer.

“The Lingering Scent of Her Divinity” is the opening track on the EP and makes me wish that more American (The Canyon Observer is a Slovenian band) mainstream metal went back or at least ventured into this avenue more.  There’s a sound of primal instinct that surrounds this song whenever I listen to it, and the build ups to to the heavier parts of the song are seamless.

“Your Feathers Infect My Scars, The Ones You Gave Me”, continues in the same sludge-ridden vein as “The Lingering Scent..” except deconstructs and presents itself as more haunting and endless.  Then from out of nowhere, a wrath of aural beating ensues. Awesome.

“Our Universe, Written In Blood” is the tamest track on this EP, but still manages to stay true to the rest of the EP by combining the serene with the sludge.  The EP then ends with “My Will”, which uses the most noise/experimentation on the EP. Both tracks provide a more diverse half of the EP.

You can check out more of The Canyon Observer by visiting their Facebook Page, and Kapa Records.  I’ve also included a free download of the track ”Your Feathers Infect My Scars, The Ones You Gave Me”.
